Announcing the Annual ATPIO Student Travel Fellowship for the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), Washington, D.C.

The ATPIO is pleased to announce the launch of the annual ATPIO Travel Fellowship to be awarded each year to a post-graduate (M.Tech., M.S., or Ph.D.) student pursuing studies at an institute of higher education in India. The Travel Fellowship, in the amount of $750, will be awarded to one student for purposes of attending the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) held each year in Washington, D.C. in the month of January (please see below for dates of TRB Annual Meetings). Although this fellowship will not cover all of the costs associated with traveling to and attending the TRB Annual Meeting, it is envisaged that this fellowship will cover some of the costs and help facilitate conference attendance for a student who is able to raise additional funds in India. For planning purposes, the $750 travel fellowship is generally sufficient to cover costs of accommodation for 5 nights, meals and other local expenses, and conference registration (early student registration fee). The student awardee from India will share hotel accommodation with a post-graduate student of Indian origin studying at a university in the United States.

Although not an absolute requirement, preference will be given to students who have a paper accepted for presentation/publication at the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board. Also, it is sufficient to be a registered/enrolled student at the time of application to qualify for the award.

Application Procedure:
  1. Establish ATPIO as a self-sustained and non-profit organization
  2. Submit a detailed cover letter/essay addressed to the Board of the ATPIO explaining why you would like to attend the TRB Annual Meeting and describing your career goals and aspirations.  Clearly describe how attending the Annual TRB Meeting will help you achieve your career goals and aspirations.
  3. Submit a detailed resume (curriculum vita) with full details regarding education, coursework and grades, publications, presentations, skills, awards and honors, work experience, project(s) details, and any other information that might be useful to the ATPIO Board in evaluating your credentials.
  4. Submit TWO letters of reference (recommendation) from professors who are familiar with your qualifications, experience, and credentials.  One letter must be from your project/thesis advisor.
  5. Submit a copy of the e-mail message from the Transportation Research Board indicating acceptance of paper for presentation/publication at the Annual Meeting (if applicable/optional).
  6. Submit all of the above materials electronically via e-mail in MS Word or Acrobat PDF format only to the Secretary of the ATPIO at atpio.secretary@gmail.com.  No paper applications will be accepted.
  7. The deadline for submission/receipt of all materials is October 25 of each year

Award Procedure:
  1. The ATPIO Board will review all applications and make the award. The quality of the cover letter/essay, academic qualifications, overall credentials, acceptance of a paper for presentation/publication in the Annual Meeting, and letters of reference will be considered carefully in making award decisions.
  2. The ATPIO President will notify the award winner no later than November 10 of each year.  This will provide the award winner about two months to obtain the visa and make necessary travel arrangements.  The ATPIO Secretary will assist the awardee with hotel accommodation and early-bird conference registration, as well as any documents/paperwork that may assist in the visa application process.
  3. The Award Winner will notify the ATPIO President and Secretary by November 15 of each year as to whether he or she accepts or declines the award.  If the first award winner declines the fellowship, then the award will be made to an alternate.
  4. The ATPIO will pay conference registration fees and accommodation costs directly.  The remaining balance (out of the $750), if any, will be provided in cash to the awardee for meals and other expenses.
  5. The awardee will be expected to attend the ATPIO Annual Meeting typically held on the Sunday evening of the TRB Annual Meeting.
