  1. Establish ATPIO as a self-sustained and non-profit organization

    Strategies

    1. Register as a non-profit organization.
    2. Apply for tax-exemption.
    3. Pass the by-laws.
    4. Document the by-laws.
    5. Continually evolve vision, goals and objectives to address the dynamically changing needs of the beneficiaries.

    7. Conceive and implement an organizational work force structure.
    8. Constitute special task forces to achieve specific tasks. For example:
      1. Task force to identify broad strategies for implementation
      2. Activity task force to pursue the strategies identified by the strategy task force
    9. Expand membership and diversity of the organization.
    10. Improve the financial sustainability.
    11. Organize fundraisers for the financial stability of the organization.

    Metrics and Milestones

    1. Complete all essential paper work to register the organization by December, 2006.
    2. Complete the documentation on by-laws, goals and vision available by December, 2006.
    3. Elect board of directors and officers by July, 2006.
    4. Prioritize tasks and assign responsibilities to the task forces by December, 2006.
    5. Use the number of members as a surrogate metric to measure the outreach and success of the organization.
    6. Continually evolve vision, goals and objectives to address the dynamically changing needs of the beneficiaries.
    7. Can use availability of funds at end of each fiscal year and proposed expenditure to measure the current standing of the organization and its financial sustainability.
  2. Make ATPIO a cohesive and an effective organization by facilitating productive interaction between members and through transparency in all its proceedings.

    Strategies

    1. Setup a listserv for emails (There should be an upper limit on the number of emails to be dispatched per month to avoid spam).
    2. Build and maintain up-to-date website and web blog.
    3. Organize annual or bi-annual meetings.
    4. Publish annual reports stating the progress and financial activities of ATPIO.
    5. Post the minutes from annual or bi-annual meetings on the website.
    6. Publish monthly or bi-monthly newsletters.
    7. Conceive and implement an organizational work force structure.
    8. Constitute special task forces to achieve specific tasks. For example:
    9. Organize independent sessions, meeting or teleconferences (arranged by respective task forces and subcommittees).

    Metrics and Milestones

    1. Make available a well-organized online resource by July, 2006.
    2. Can use the number of meetings held per year as a metric for estimating interaction between committee members.
    3. Can use the number of published reports as a measure of activities undertaken and amount of transparency in the proceedings.
  3. Exchange ideas and collaborate with organizations in India to provide tangible results

    Strategies

    1. Establish contacts in India for collaborations with transportation professionals.
    2. Assign liaisons and responsibilities.
    3. Contact transport-related businesses owned by persons of Indian Origin and establish liaison.
    4. Build a database with entries of all the interested and collaborating organizations and professionals.

    Metrics and Milestones

    1. Setup an online data resource by July, 2007.
    2. Can use the number of collaborations with Indian organizations as a measure of effectiveness.
    3. Can use the number of hits on the online data resource to give an estimate of its popularity and use.
  4. Address issues and concerns of transportation professionals of Indian origin

    Strategies

    1. Provide a forum for discussing issues and concerns of transportation professionals of Indian origin during annual/ bi-annual meetings.
    2. Identify the issues of immediate concerns and constitute subcommittees to address these issues.
    3. Organize call for papers/conferences in India and other countries focusing on topics of concern..

    Metrics and Milestones

    1. Prepare a formal document stating the issues identified to be of immediate concern by December, 2006.
    2. Constitute committees focusing on these issues by July, 2007.
    3. Can use the number of conferences papers submitted as a measure of outreach and interest.
    4. Can also use the participation in the organized conference as a measure of outreach and interest.
  5. Provide opportunities for students of Indian origin to excel in the field of transportation

    Strategies

    1. Establish contacts with universities within India and outside.
    2. Have student chapters in major universities of India and abroad to promote the ATPIO goals.
    3. Organize student paper contests on topics related to transportation issues of India.
    4. Provide financial support for deserving students.
    5. Set up dedicated scholarship funds.
    6. Provide guidance/information to students planning to pursue higher studies in North America.
    7. Have a representation of students in the ATPIO Board of Directors to gain first-hand knowledge of student needs.

    Metrics and Milestones

    1. Set up an online resource to provide guidance and information to students by December, 2007.
    2. Can use the number of scholarships awarded per year as a measure of financial support offered by the organization to the deserving students.
    3. Can use the number of ATPIO student chapters as a measure of outreach of the organization among students.
    4. Can use the number of hits on the online data resource as an estimate of its popularity and use.
